Michigan, Hewlett-Packard Reach Deal To Continue Updating SOS Computers

GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) – The state of Michigan and Hewlett-Packard have reached a deal that returns HP employees to a major computer project affecting services offered by the Secretary of State.

The agreement was disclosed Friday in Kent County court.

The state terminated a multimillion-dollar contract with HP in August. Three days later, employees stopped reporting to work, although the state says they still were required to provide support.

Judge Chris Yates has scheduled another hearing for Nov. 2. The state wants HP to turn over computer code created to run the system.

HP had started the project in 2005 to replace the mainframe-based computer system used at all 131 offices where cars are registered. The 2010 deadline for HP to deliver the system replacement was not met, forcing the state department to continue to use the legacy system — which was largely built in the late 1960s with now-outdated programming languages, according to officials.

HP says “it’s unfortunate” that Michigan terminated the contract. An audit in 2012 found fault on both sides.
